Too early to book your summer holiday?

Airline market watchers have been predicting that tourism and low-cost carriers will be the initial drivers for the return surge in passenger traffic, and easyJet’s holiday bookings seem to bear that out. EasyJet’s holiday division reports a summer bookings rise by 250% over last year, though from an unprecedented low level of course.

May is currently proving to be the most popular month for holidays, according to easyJet chief executive Johan Lundgren.

"We know there is pent up demand - we have seen that every time restrictions have been relaxed, and so we know that people want to go on holiday as soon as they can", Lundgren told the BBC.

This summer, easyJet has 836 routes scheduled, OAG data indicates, down about 20% from 2019. EasyJet’s top route is Amsterdam – London Gatwick, the same as a year ago. Of eight major tourist destinations, Greece, Portugal, Turkey, and Egypt expect significantly higher bookings (about 2 million seats combined).

However, because of recent tightening of restrictions on travel to the UK, easyJet is cancelling holidays booked through March 24.

Also this week, the LCC signed a £1.4 billion five-year term loan facility through the UK government’s Export Development Guarantee scheme.
