More than 30 airlines have committed to the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) '25by2025', an initiative to increase female employment within the industry.
The announcement came at Wings of Change Europe - a gathering of aviation stakeholders in Berlin, Germany.
Airlines pledging to '25by2025' undertake to increase female representation at senior and under-represented levels to a minimum of 25% or by 25% from current levels, by 2025. The choice of target helps airlines at any point on the diversity journey to participate meaningfully.
"We welcome the airlines that have committed to the 25by2025 campaign," said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA Director General and CEO.
"This has created huge momentum for this very important issue. We need a skilled, diverse and gender balanced workforce to meet the growing needs of our customers. Our eventual goal is equal gender participation at all levels, and the 25by2025 pledge is the start of our journey."
Estimates from the International Society of Women Airline Pilots show there are 7,409 female pilots globally. They account for 5.2 % of the global pilot workforce.
