The number of registered airplanes in South Korea rose 2.2 percent last year, the transport ministry said.
Airplane registrations were 853, up 18 from a year earlier due to low-cost carriers (LCC) increasing the number of planes on international routes, Yohap News reported.
Plane registrations should exceed 1,000 within the next four years, the ministry said.
"The number of LCCs is expected to rise in line with higher travel demand at lower prices compared to full-service carriers like Korean Air Lines Co. It will drive up the number of airplane registrations," a ministry official was quoted as saying by Yonhap News.
South Korea has two full-service carriers, Korean Air and Asiana Airlines Inc. It also has seven LCCs, Jeju Air, Jin Air, Air Busan, Air Seoul, Eastar Jet, T'way and Fly Gangwon.
Air Premia Co. and Aero K Airlines Co. could join the LCC market in 2020.
The ministry will host the 2020 Asian Aviation Education and Training Symposium in Seoul, South Korea on 18-19 June. Presentations which explore new ideas and developments in aviation training will be welcomed and considered.
