Poland-based manufacturer SimWorld has delivered Taipei, Taiwan’s first simulator, a normally routine task made more complicated by pandemic restrictions.

“This was by far one of the most challenging projects we have ever completed,” the company commented. “With many question marks and doubts on the way, working in very difficult circumstances in distant time zones and striving to get the simulator fully up and running by the nearing deadlines and the grand opening. But we made it!”

The customer for the commercial narrowbody aircraft fixed-base trainer (FBT) is Catsim Aviation.

Regulators should highlight the need for changes to the training process. For more on this topic, read  The Importance of Investing in E-learning and Simulators.

This device was completed last summer at SimWorld’s Poznan facility, but Taiwan was in lockdown. An entry ban made the normal process of sending an installation team impossible. So engineers and management worked out modifications to enable the installation to be carried out by the customer with online assistance. As airfreight costs were prohibitive, the FBT was shipped by sea, requiring several weeks to arrive.

“It took both teams roughly the same amount of manhours as usual to assemble the simulator, configure and test it thoroughly. The final result was great and only few minor issues had been identified, which were successfully resolved in cooperation,” SimWorld stated.

Begun as a hobby manufacturing components, SimWorld is a 12-year-old FSTD provider with more than 200 customers in over 50 countries, including FBTs and EASA/FAA- approved FNPT IIs and AATDs. The manufacturing business is also known as Flight Training Devices. Their commercial simcenter, GearUP! in Poznan, opened in 2015 has hosted more than 12000 visitors. SimWorld/FTD’s claims to distinction include designing and producing their own simulator parts, including proprietary electronic components, CNC machining, CAD/CAM methods, and new types of resins or carbon composites.

The CAT Aviation Taipei center offers the “Cathouse Simulation Experience” with one hour in the FBT for NT$3000 (about $108 USD). “You can fully experience the fun of flying operations and provide customized content settings, allowing you to decide for yourself the airport and ambient weather you want to take off and land,” their promotion appeals. “If you want to fly from Taiwan to Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea or even every corner of the world, there is no problem!”
