EBT Solutions and the EBT Foundation have launched a new brand, Salient. Both EBT Solutions and the EBT Foundation have developed their reputation in providing support for Evidence-based Training (EBT), and the heart of this is the drive for improved safety and efficiency through effective learning. As Salient will continue its research work, currently updating results from the LOSA archive and developing a new methodology for in-service validation of pilot competencies.

(Left) Salient is led by a founder of the EBT concept, Capt. Michael Varney. He presented the idea and led the development until publication by ICAO in 2013. Michael is an experienced airline pilot, instructor, and examiner with substantial experience in training development, simulation, and regulation.

Salient, now with an expanded team, has greater potential to provide more ongoing support. It has divided what it offers into Training Services and Consulting Services, aiming to broaden its reach in helping organizations to help them realize the full benefits of EBT and Competency-based Training and Assessment (CBTA). The ICAO has expanded the concept of Evidence-based Training with recent changes to Annex 1 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation – Personnel Licensing, and Doc 9868 PANS – Training. EBT is now part of a wider vision for CBTA.

While the organization is made up of the same people with the same vision and style, improvements have been made to the organization and approach. Salient has formed some new partnerships including one with Management and Excellence. Over the last two years, it has worked with Dr. Bill Cox to use the SMART ROI method to quantify cost benefits from Competency-based approaches of EBT and CBTA.

Having learned so much from EBT over the last seven years, the organization is able to maximize the value of the concept, as a well as broaden what it offers into CBTA and related areas. Its mission is to help organizations develop resilience to unexpected and unforeseeable events; developing a learning culture based on well-researched principles and helping organizations make improvements in safety and efficiency through the implementation of innovative pilot training programs.
