The second instalment in the CAT Leader Forum series focused on CBTA (Competency-Based Training and Assessment).

Hosted by Halldale Group and the Airline Training Policy Group (ATPG), the panel consisted of Captain Ignacio Gallego and Captain Christian Norden.

The duo looked into the history of pilot training to understand the shift to CBTA, gave tips to avoid creating robots when standardizing instructions and wrapped up with a summary of the road map for ICAO and EASA as we look to the future of CBTA.

The key takeaways from this discussion were:

  • The industry (airlines, ATOs, regulators) need to have open dialogue on CBTA best practices to ensure we get a single agreed & compatible approach to roll-out
  • CBTA is a marathon, not a sprint. Priorities are (1) engage with your regulator and industry experts (2) focus on instructor buy-in and standardisation (3) safe-guard good quality data
  • The briefing/debriefing room and the sim are connected not just physically with the bridge, but mentally in terms of the getting to root cause - both are essential tools in CBTA and neither work in isolation.
