The University of Edinburgh has won the 2023 Formula Student (FS) Artificial Intelligence (AI) competition at the 2023 Formula Student event, which celebrated its 25th anniversary this year.
Over 130 teams from all over the world converged on Silverstone from 19-23 July to design and race autonomous electric and hybrid cars from scratch.
Babcock International Group is the AI Partner for the event, run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, which gives graduate engineers real-world engineering and project management experience before joining industry.
Sandor Felber, FS President for Edinburgh, said they were thrilled to be the winners of the FS AI award for the sixth consecutive year.
“We have worked tirelessly to develop the software that allows us to run the vehicle completely autonomously on the racetrack. The fact that we won is a testament to the engineering ability of our interdisciplinary team of AI specialists. This is a huge credit to them and we’re grateful for Babcock supporting the AI teams again this year.”
Supporting next generation engineers and technologists is a core part of Babcock’s STEM programme, said Group Engineering Director, Neil Young.
“Our engineers are working on some of the biggest engineering challenges facing us today, and that means we need the best engineers, the best talent, to work with us,” said Young. “Areas like AI and Autonomous Systems are becoming a significant focus area for us around the business, and we had our own team of FS Alumni out in force for the event, working alongside the AI university teams learning about new research, new technologies and how they are being applied autonomously.”
