The Women in Aviation International — Singapore Chapter (WAI-SG) has created a scholarship program specifically to support young women keen on a career in aviation. This program is intended to promote diversity and inspire a new generation of women in the business, aviation studies and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields of aviation.
This inaugural scholarship will be awarded for the 2024 academic year and may be used towards tuition fees for the duration of the undergraduate degree in a local university. Beyond financial support, the program is expected to incorporate holistic development through WAI-SG's network, programs and potential internship opportunities.
WAI-SG is a not-for-profit organization that is on a mission to nurture and boost women talents for a fast-evolving aviation industry in Singapore. In addition to the scholarship program, it runs an annual calendar of awareness, educational and mentorship initiatives to encourage young girls to consider a future career in aviation as well as support and advance women professionals already in the industry. Its current individual members of over 150 executives and numerous corporate sponsors from the aviation and aerospace contribute to and support these initiatives.
Lou-Ann Seet, WAI-SG Vice-President said: “The demand for qualified and diverse talents across all functions in the aviation industry is growing. However, access to learning and training to enter the industry can be a barrier for many. With women making up nearly half of Singapore’s population, we believe that with the right opportunities and resources – from financial support to pursue higher education, to having access to mentors who are industry experts and leaders, they will be able to build a thriving career in aviation and aerospace. This is why we’ve developed the WAI-SG Scholarship Program. Our goal is to support 20 women over the next 10 years through this program. We are therefore seeking partners to make this a reality by investing in the growth and sustainability of this life changing initiative.”
The scholarship program will be launched at WAI-SG’s second annual Gala Dinner on 5 October 2023. The event is an opportunity for executives, partners and allies across the aviation and aerospace industries to come together to network as well as support WAI-SG’s mission, initiatives and programs. Singapore’s Acting Minister for Transport, Mr. Chee Hong Tat, will be attending the Gala Dinner as the Guest-of-Honour.
The Gala Dinner is open to anyone in, or are interested in, the Singapore aviation industry. Tickets can be purchased via the WAI-SG website.
