The precision of language is paramount. Effective communication is the lifeblood of safety and efficiency in the skies. At EATS 2023, Henry Emery, a distinguished board member of the International Civil Aviation English Association (ICAEA), brings forth his expertise in aviation language testing.
Henry Emery: A Visionary in Aviation Language Proficiency
For over 15 years, Henry Emery has enhanced the language proficiency of aviation professionals. As a board member of the ICAEA, Henry has left an indelible mark on the industry. His contributions include being a member of the ICAEA Test Design Guidelines editorial committee and co-authoring the acclaimed books, "Aviation English" (Macmillan, 2008) and "Check Your Aviation English" (Macmillan, 2010).
Henry's leadership extends to projects, such as the English Test for Aviation – the world's first test endorsed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
He also managed the ICAO Rated Speech Samples Training Aid, further solidifying his reputation as a thought leader in aviation language training and testing.
Harmonizing Language Proficiency Requirements
ICAO introduced Language Proficiency Requirements in 2003 to ensure precise and secure radio communications in the aviation industry. However, over the years, differing interpretations of the standard have led to varying test designs, creating uncertainty in what tests measure and the significance of scores. Such disparities have raised concerns about overall quality.
In response to this pressing need for harmonization, The International Civil Aviation English Association has formulated a comprehensive set of test design guidelines. These guidelines encompass eight key aspects of language test design, addressing content, tasks, assessment, and test maintenance.
Henry Emery's presentation at EATS 2023 offers a unique opportunity to dive into these transformative guidelines. Attendees, especially Approved Training Organizations (ATOs) responsible for developing, administering, and overseeing aviation language testing, will gain valuable insights into the future of language proficiency in aviation.
