Veteran aviation training journalist Rick Adams and D-L Nelson will publish an immersive look at the emerging technologies of artificial intelligence (AI) and how early-adopter organizations in the simulation and training sphere are attempting to apply AI to improve data analysis for personnel selection, instructional support, and personalized training.

The Robot in the Simulator: Artificial Intelligence for Aviation Training will be released as an eBook on 31 May 2024. The pre-publication price is US $299. After 31 May, the regular price will be US $360.

The eBook can be pre-ordered through the Aviation Voices website.

Compiled from extensive research and interviews, the new eBook will be of interest to training developers and providers who are seeking to apply AI to enhance learning options for pilots, maintenance technicians, cabin crew, instructors and other aviation personnel.

The Robot in the Simulator will feature numerous case studies of aviation training organizations who are pioneering AI development,” said Adams. “Among those interviewed to date about AI projects and challenges are Airline Pilot Club, AI-Redefined, Axis Simulation, CAE, Daedalean, FlightSafety International, Hinfact, IBM, Illumia Labs, L-3Harris, Paladin/TXT, Vocavio and others.”

The eBook will feature a guide to the dynamic, daily-changing technologies of artificial intelligence and machine learning and an extensive bibliography of hundreds of sources so organizations can get a head start with their own research.

“With the advent of ChatGPT, text-to-image, text-to-video and other tools, there is an explosion of interest in AI for education,” said Nelson. “There is a great deal of information... and unfortunately misinformation... to wade through if you’re looking to apply these new technologies efficiently and effectively. The purpose of the Aviation Voices eBook is to help accelerate the learning curve for you.”

Rick Adams, a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society (FRAeS), has more than four decades’ experience directing communications for industry-leading aerospace companies and writing for respected aviation publications worldwide. He has been Editor of four major aviation journals, including for Halldale (Civil Aviation Training, Military Simulation & Training), HMG and ICAO. He is also Chair of the Pilot Training Conference at the World Aviation Training Summit (WATS), 29 April through 2 May in Orlando, Florida.

D-L Nelson has been one of the leading communicators in the micro-finance industry. Founder and Publisher of CU Newswire, she has interviewed government leaders such as Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, President of Poland Lech Walesa, and Mexican President Vicente Fox, as well as World Council of Credit Unions officials. Nelson also marketed IT consultancy services for InterSkill and managed internal communications for the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Nelson has published 17 books.

Adams and Nelson recently created the AviationVoices.com website as an in-depth resource hub for safety/training topics and the first AI-personalized weekly eNewsletter for Commercial Aviation Safety & Training Professionals.

The Robot in the Simulator is the first of a planned series of eBooks on major aviation training topics. Future topics in development include A/M/V/XR, the Single Pilot / Autonomy Debate, and Training for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM). Adams is Editor for a new Royal Aeronautical Society briefing paper on the future of AAM flight safety.
