Chris Rocheleau has been named Acting Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) following his appointment by President Donald Trump. His appointment comes at a critical time, as FAA investigators are currently supporting the NTSB-led investigation into a midair collision near Reagan Washington National Airport.
The accident occurred on January 29, 2025, when a PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700, operating as American Airlines Flight 5342 from Wichita, Kansas, collided with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter while on approach to Runway 33. The NTSB is leading the investigation and will provide all updates.
The FAA stated, “The FAA will quickly take any actions necessary based on evidence from the investigation.”
Airlines for America (A4A) President and CEO Nicholas E. Calio said: “While the investigation is just beginning, there are other challenges facing the aviation industry — the air traffic controller staffing shortage, aging FAA technologies, capacity constraints and more.”
“Commercial air travel in the U.S. is the safest mode of transportation in the world, and President Trump himself said today, ‘Flying is very safe. We have the safest flying anywhere in the world, and we’ll keep it that way.’”
