Horizon Aircraft, a Canadian aerospace engineering company, has been recognized with the Industry Excellence Award for Small Business Innovation and Technology at the Aerospace Industry Awards, hosted by the Aerospace Industry Association of Canada (AIAC). This award honors the company’s contributions to the Canadian aerospace sector, particularly in advancing technology within the electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) field.

The AIAC annual awards celebrate individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the aerospace industry. Horizon Aircraft joins a select group of awardees recognized for their efforts in advancing technological innovation.

The award was presented at the AIAC Annual Aerospace Summit on November 5, 2024, which gathers industry professionals, leaders, and government officials to acknowledge the progress and achievements within the aerospace sector. Horizon Aircraft’s Cavorite X7, a hybrid eVTOL aircraft, was highlighted as a key achievement. The aircraft is designed to have a gross weight of 5,500 lbs, a maximum speed of 250 miles per hour, and a range of over 500 miles. The Cavorite X7 is being developed for various applications, including medical evacuation, critical supply delivery, disaster relief, and special military missions. The aircraft is also being considered for regional air mobility, transporting people and cargo over distances of 50 to 500 miles.

The Cavorite X7’s hybrid electric power system allows the aircraft to recharge its batteries in-flight and post-flight, providing system redundancy and enabling efficient performance. The design aims for the aircraft to spend 98% of its mission time in a low-drag configuration, similar to a traditional aircraft, enhancing safety and potentially easing certification compared to other eVTOL designs. Horizon Aircraft is currently conducting tests on a 50%-scale version of the aircraft, which is expected to reduce technical risks as development continues toward the full-scale model.

Brandon Robinson, CEO of Horizon Aircraft, commented: “This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team, whose commitment to innovation within the eVTOL space is the driving force behind our Cavolite X7, a hybrid eVTOL built for operational reality. We are proud to be driving sustainable innovation in Canadian aerospace and will continue pushing the boundaries of technology to deliver solutions that further advance the rapidly growing eVTOL sector.”
