The Qantas Group is committing over $40 million to launch new training programs and enhance its existing facilities across Australia, focusing on developing aviation and safety skills to meet future industry demands. A cornerstone of this investment is the launch of the Qantas Group Safety Academy, an Australian-first initiative aimed at providing advanced safety training credentials to aviation professionals and industry leaders. Partnering with Griffith University and RMIT University, the Safety Academy is set to open in 2025 with micro-credential courses on key safety topics, including safety culture, risk and data management, cyber safety, and human factors like sleep and fatigue management. Courses can be taken online or at RMIT University, with credits available towards further post-graduate qualifications.

In addition to the Safety Academy, the Qantas Group will establish a dedicated Ground Training Facility in Sydney by mid-2026. Located at Qantas’ Mascot campus, this facility will serve over 5,000 Qantas, Jetstar, and QantasLink pilots and cabin crew annually. It will feature door trainers, virtual reality spaces, and a narrow-body cabin trainer, creating a robust environment for emergency procedures training. The Sydney facility will work in tandem with a new ground training site set to open in Perth in 2025, and emergency training equipment will be added to existing facilities in Brisbane and Melbourne to support specific fleet expansions.

To promote greater diversity in the aviation field, Qantas will also double its number of scholarships for female and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at the Qantas Group Pilot Academy in Toowoomba in 2025. Twenty scholarships, each valued up to $30,000, will help cover accommodation and food, opening pathways for more aspiring pilots from diverse backgrounds.

“As we train the next generation of pilots, we want to make sure that we’re reaching a broader and more diverse talent base which is why we’re expanding our scholarship program for the Qantas Group Pilot Academy,” said Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson.

These initiatives aim to equip Australia’s aviation industry with the skills and safety knowledge necessary to lead future advancements while fostering a diverse talent pipeline.
