The NATO Modelling and Simulation Group of NATO's Science and Technology Organisation has held this year's Fall Business Meeting from 16-18 October 2017 in Lisbon, Portugal. For the 40th time now, the semi-annual event brought together MSG Members, Associate Members and invited guests from NATO Member and Partner Nations.
Right at the start of the meeting, Alan R. Shaffer, director Collaboration Support Office, thanked the participants for helping reshaping, refining and improving the Collaborative Program of Work (CPoW) - CPoW is a network which involves roughly 5,000 scientists, engineers, and analysts across NATO. However, Shaffer is concerned about the demographic age structure of the network. Still 42% are over 50 years old; 16% over 60 and only 11% under 40. To rejuvenate the team, the STO has launched an initiative to award junior researchers.
During the business meeting, the plenary endorsed the following new activities:
NMSG is also looking for participants in a new Exploratory Team on High-Fidelity Electro-Optic/Infrared Scene Simulation for Decision Support. The objective of this exploratory team would be to establish the state of the art in tools and techniques for high fidelity EO/IR scene simulation in NATO and partner nations: e.g. how these capabilities are being used to improve decision-making in support of operations.
