The RAF has renamed a training facility at RAF Shawbury in honour of The Duke of Cambridge. The Duke completed advanced flying training at the Defence Helicopter Flying School, receiving an aircrew flying badge in January 2010.
The Duke of Cambridge Building is part of the UK Military Flying Training System and houses advanced FTDs. The next generation of aircrew will learn many of their skills here before getting airborne in the fleet of 29 Juno (H135) and 3 Jupiter (H145) helicopters.
“I have very happy memories of learning to fly at RAF Shawbury and I am sure that the future generation of rotary aircrew will benefit greatly from these world-class facilities,” said The Duke of Cambridge, Prince William.
Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Mike Wigston conducted the naming ceremony. Air Chief Marshal Wigston also unveiled a plaque to commemorate the rebadging of the Defence Helicopter Flying School to No. 1 Flying Training School.
"This is a very proud moment for RAF Shawbury," he said. "This important milestone represents years of committed and dedicated work by Defence and Ascent Flight Training."
