Aerospace engineer Meggitt is leading a consortium of aerospace suppliers working on production of ventilators for Britain's National Health Service.

The aerospace group also includes GKN, Airbus, Thales and Renishaw, British media reported.  The consortium is one of three aiming to develop and produce 20,000 medical ventilator prototypes to solve the shortage in the NHS amid the COVID-19 outbreak. Automotive companies Nissan and McLaren are heading the other two groups.

Meggitt mainly makes components for military and civil aircraft but does have some medical technology experience.

Meggitt said it had measures in place to operate through the outbreak.
