China’s military has been holding joint army and air force exercises to test combat readiness levels. Combined army – air force training exercises aimed at joint force operations have been increasing in frequency, in the recent past.

The PLA Army (PLAA) and PLA Air Force (PLAAF) have been participating in exercises held somewhere in northwest China, since July. The exercises involved PLAA air defence troops under its Western Theater Command. "It seems to be a small step of sharing air intelligence, but actually is a giant leap of system integration," the commanding officer of the air force base was quoted by China Military Online.

Several PLAA air defence battalions under an army air defence brigade took turns participating in the exercises under the command of an air force base for alert duty. The army air defense battalions were also integrated in the air force base’s early warning system.

According to the website, the PLAA radars were more accurate in detecting targets and filled in the blind spots in the air base’s early warning radar system. The air defence battalions were also able to detect and engage targets at longer ranges due to their integration with the base early warning system.
