The Australian Army’s 3rd Brigade based in Townsville has concluded Exercise Brolga Crawl conducted at troop and platoon level. For many 3rd Brigade soldiers, posted to the unit after recruit training, this was their first exercise.
The foundational warfighting exercise was aimed at developing individual technical skills as well as basic soldiering, leadership and collective team building within the tactical environment.
Developing small-team skills in a crawl exercise is essential before progressing to more complex scenarios, said Commander 3rd Brigade, Brigadier Kahlil Fegan. “We’re looking at always being future ready and embracing new technologies to give us a competitive advantage on the battlefield.”
“This training is absolutely essential. Over the past 12 months we’ve had the privilege of deploying about 1,400 soldiers on operations and the reason they have performed so well and so safely in support of our communities and coalition partners is because they’re so well trained,” Brigadier Fegan said.
A suite of advanced equipment and weapons systems were used over the course of the training exercise to ensure that units within 3rd Brigade are prepared for varied possible scenarios and operational requirements.
