The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) recently tested the submarine-hunting and Anti-Surface Warfare (ASW) capability of its helicopter fleet during Exercise Tigerfish.
MH-60R Seahawk helicopters from the Nowra-based No. 816 Squadron participated in the two week long exercise during which over 16 weapons were employed.
No. 816 Squadron crew engaged various surface and sub-surface training targets by dropping recoverable exercise torpedoes and firing precision air-to-ground missiles and rockets, off Australia’s Eastern coast. The exercises provided invaluable live weapons training coupled with deployment of multiple weapons over the course of the exercises.
“The success of Tigerfish has been crucial in furthering the MH-60R capability and increasing the lethality of our operational aircrews,” said Flight Commander No. 816 Squadron’s Flight 1, Lieutenant Commander Matthew Hudson. “For participating aircrew, the exercise provided a valuable opportunity to hone complex skills obtained in aircraft simulators with live weapons and real-world environments.”
The RAN operates a fleet of 24 MH-60Rs across No. 816 and No. 725 Squadrons.
