The Indian Air Force has inaugurated a new Weapon Systems School (WSS) at Air Force Station Begumpet, Hyderabad.
The new WSS was inaugurated by Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, Chief of the Air Staff and will cater to the training needs of the air force’s newly created Weapon Systems (WS) branch which was created in October 2022.
Flight Cadets of the WS Branch will undergo their second semester of training at the new WSS, which could also emerge as a nodal centre for weapon systems training in the country.
The WS branch will unify the operators of the air force’s ground-based and specialist airborne weapon systems under a single structure.
The WS branch will have four specialised streams - operators of Surface-to-Surface missiles, Surface-to-Air missiles, Remotely Piloted Aircraft and Weapon System Operators in twin/multi-crew aircraft.
Branch members can be further detailed into those in the flying stream who operate weapons and systems on airborne platforms like the SU-30 MKI and C-130J; personnel operating RPAs and their sensors; Mission Commanders and operators for Surface-to-Air and Surface-to-Surface weapon systems, and personnel in the Intelligence stream who handle space-based intelligence and imagery.
