India recently concluded its first ever space exercise Antariksha Abhyas – 2024. The three-day space table top exercise held in New Delhi, war-gamed growing threats from and to India’s space based assets and services was conducted by the Defence Space Agency of Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff.
Speaking at the commencement of Ex Antariksha Abhyas 24, India’s Chief of Defence Staff and senior most military officer, General Anil Chauhan said, space was now the critical enabler of India’s defence and security apparatus. “With its rich legacy of space exploration and growing military capabilities, India is well positioned to navigate the challenges posed to space-based capabilities”.
The first of its kind exercise has helped inform India’s strategic objectives in space and integrate the nation’s space capabilities in military operations. Following the completion of the exercise, India’s Ministry of Defence announced that key out-comes included refined strategies for operational preparedness, a robust framework for future collaboration and a clear road map for advancing India’s space doctrine and capabilities in the line with national security objectives.
Key components of the exercise included focused discussions on emerging space technologies, space situational awareness and India’s space programmes.
The importance of monitoring and protecting critical assets and maintaining situational awareness in an increasingly contested space environment were highlighted in discussions during the exercise.
The exercise featured participants from the Defence Space Agency and its allied units along with Army, Navy and the Air Force personnel. Specialist branches under Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff viz Defence Cyber Agency, Defence Intelligence Agency and Strategic Forces Command also participated in the exercises along with representatives from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO).
