Construction is proceeding apace for a new Indian Coast Guard (ICG) training ship with the keel laying ceremony held at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL), Mumbai this month.
The contract for the construction of the ship was concluded in October 2023 with MDL at a value of INR 3.1 billion (approximately USD 400 million). MDL is slated to deliver the training vessel in December 2026.
“The primary role of the vessel includes basic sea training to Coast Guard under trainee officers and adequate exposure to the trainees in all aspects of Coast Guard life at sea” an ICG spokesperson said.
It will have a total complement of 223, including 70 under trainee officers and 46 training staff. The ship will be equipped with specialised facilities such as a training bridge for cadets, a chart house, and dedicated classrooms.
The 107m (351ft) training ship is powered by two diesel engines, allowing it to achieve speeds in excess of 20 knots and have a range of 7,500 nautical miles.
It will also feature AI-based predictive maintenance systems, a multipurpose drone, embarked helicopter, Integrated Bridge System and Integrated Platform Management System.
