U.S. and Philippine Navy SEALs recently conducted joint training to seize a gas platform in the Philippines near the South China Sea. The week-long exercise took place in El Nido, Palawan, and included room clearing, casualty care, and capturing a defunct offshore rig. These drills, part of ongoing military cooperation, have increasingly focused on areas near disputed waters.
Palawan serves as a strategic base for Philippine operations in the region. Similar platform seizure exercises occurred during past Balikatan events, including the 2023 Masinloc rig drill. Some defunct platforms have been converted into coastal monitoring stations by the Philippine Navy.
"Training in this environment provides unique opportunities to refine our skills, particularly in jungle warfare," said an NSW operator. "Working alongside NAVSOU in these challenging conditions has enhanced our capabilities and strengthened our partnership."
