Event Description

The RAeS Flight Simulation Specialist Group is pleased to announce the Programme for our 2024 Conference taking place over four sessions on 22nd and 23rd October. We have over 30 presenters from around the world representing Industry, Academia and the Regulatory Authorities.

The Conference opens with a Regulatory session, where EASA, UK CAA, and FAA are participating and we will be covering:

  • EASA’s upcoming regulatory updates to CS-FSTD and Part ORA/ARA with an opportunity to “ask the Regulator” in the panel session
  • The latest Aviation Authority thinking on Regulation for Autonomous Aviation
  • Cases studies of Training Devices utilising new technologies that have been qualified under existing regulations with perspectives from manufacturers and regulators
  • Future direction for regulation and qualification of new and emerging technologies

Participating in the technical sessions we have a number of specialist SMEs and major OEMs, including Airbus, Leonardo, Thales, BAe Systems, Saab, TRU, and academics from the UK, USA, and Germany.

The Virtual Test Environments and Digital Twins session will cover:

  • Designing and maintaining effective test environments
  • Certification by Simulation covering principles and practice and perspectives on what can be achieved and where to draw the line
  • Case studies from current projects using virtual and hybrid testing
  • Briefings from the participants in the EUROCAE Working Group in charge of the ED-247 standard and the UK Digital Twin Centre on their activities and what they plan to achieve

The evening of day one will feature the Edwin A Link Lecture, this year given by the first post holder of Chief Modelling and Simulation Officer for the RAF, Group Captain Ruari Henderson-Begg followed by a networking reception.

Day two opens with the session on Use of AI and Data in Pilot training. Topics covered will include:

  • Use of data in assessing airmanship, case studies and discussion on the benefits and pitfalls of pilot training tools
  • Case studies of real world training using AI to delivering training including SATCE
  • Latest research on the use of AI entities in Military training
  • Use of AI powered adaptive learning in pilot training

Our final session is on new Modelling and Simulation developments and looks at:

  • How VR/AR/MR and other COTS equipment and gaming platforms such as Unreal are changing the way simulations are being reproduced
  • How simulation is being used to explore incorporating AR and AI into the Flightdeck and the potential impact of the use of such technologies in the aircraft on pilot training in the future
  • Examples of various studies and pilot training programmes using VR/MR in civil pilot training

The full programme and conference booking details can be found on the Society’s website.
