Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) was approved by the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao SAR to offer the first Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program in Macao. The program will start the admission of students in the 2019/2020 academic year to train the first generation of medical professionals of Macao’s own, and contribute to the continuous progress and development of Macao’s medical qualities so as to improve the local medical services standard for local residents.

Following the inauguration of the new program, MUST will also move to establish a medical school that combines the existing resources of the Faculty of Chinese Medicine, School of Pharmacy, Faculty of Health Sciences and the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicines, to exert synergetic forces, conduct cross-disciplinary studies, move research forward in the medical field and make contributions for human well-being.

The program consists of six years of studies, including five years of regular classes and one year of clinical studies. The curriculum covers, along with basic sciences and human anatomies, advanced courses such as internal medicine, surgery, community and family medicine; medical specialists and clinical practices and intern studies. The program will be taught in an integrated, unit-based interactive group study pedagogy.

Upon graduation, students will be qualified to become licensed doctors in Macao. As long as the graduates follow the corresponding laws and regulations of the Department of Health of the Macao SAR to apply for the license, they will be eligible to practice medicine in Macao.
