The United Way of Metropolitan Dallas is expanding its Southern Dallas Thrives initiative by offering Women in Construction, a new workforce development program. The new program includes job training, supportive services, and job placement assistance for women, with a goal of creating a career pathway into the construction industry.

A certified National Center for Construction Education and Research instructor is teaching curriculum for Women in Construction at Dallas College. The program covers key construction topics and skills in a variety of areas, including plumbing and electrical. It also includes job coaching, job placement assistance, employer referrals and training on soft skills, such as best practices for finding and retaining a job.

During the six-week course, participants also receive wrap-around services, including transportation assistance, housing resources, access to equipment and more. These services are designed to remove women’s barriers to completing the course and help encourage their long-term success.

Women in Construction is the result of a partnership with Hilti North America and United Way of Metropolitan Dallas. The broader goal of Women in Construction is to help women in southern Dallas, especially Black and Latinx women, access better paying, middle-skill jobs while also helping employers develop and maintain a diverse pipeline of skilled workers. The program is one area United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and its partners are working to improve workforce equity in the Dallas-Fort Worth region and allows it to work towards its Aspire United 2030 Goals for the community. These goals include increasing by 20% the number of North Texas young adults who earn a living wage, which would add nearly $800 million in wages per year to the regional economy.
