Rockwell-Collins-Coalesence

Rockwell Collins has introduced its Coalescence mixed reality system that encapsulates the user in a virtual and augmented environment for air, land or sea missions.

Coalescence merges the trainee’s real world view with a synthetic environment providing a seamlessly enhanced, mixed reality – what the company says is a first in the defense training industry. This mixed reality provides trainees with immersive and engaging training scenarios for faster learning transfer and more effective training.

“Once a user chooses a scenario and applies the headset, they are able to see the simulated world and physical objects nearby such as a smartphone, a weapon and their hands,” said Jim Walker, vice president and managing director, Asia Pacific for Rockwell Collins. “Combining each of these dynamics creates the most real training environment next to on-site, live training at a fraction of the cost.”

The solution offers low total system latency to avoid motion sickness. Rockwell Collins will focus future efforts on adding depth- sensing technology, increasing the positional tracking volume, and technology refreshes to keep current with the latest commercial helmet mounted display developments.

The Coalescence system will be available this year with production anticipated in 2018.
