A new simulation system at William Beaumont Army Medical Center’s Labor and Delivery Department (WBAMC's L&D) aims to improve patient care and safety through training simulations for OB-GYN emergencies. Medical manakins capable of birthing infant manikins are being used to support staff conducting neonatal resuscitation training.
The simulator follows standardized guidelines put forth by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists that provides healthcare staff with instant feedback according to their performance and collects and transmits information to the Defense Health Agency to aid training platforms.
Most patients at WBAMC's L&D department are low risk, so the simulator helps train and prepare staff for emergencies. Scenarios like postpartum hemorrhage, umbilical cord prolapse, shoulder dystocia, eclampsia and more are possible with the simulator to improve clinical skills.
