Britain's Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) have updated on the ongoing building work at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk that will be home to 2 US Air Force F35 squadrons.
RAF Lakenheath is due to welcome the first of the new aircraft in late 2021. It will house the latest training and maintenance technology to prepare crews to deliver their missions effectively.
Construction began in July with two important buildings taking shape.
The squadron operations building will include an Aircraft Maintenance Unit (AMU) with separate administration, amenity, lecture theatre and classroom areas.
To improve training, work has also started on a flight simulation facility to train the next generation of F35 pilots.
"The site is changing and improving every day and it is exciting to see key buildings like the flight simulator and the maintenance unit beginning to take shape," said DIO USVF Programme Director, Keith Maddison.
DIO awarded a £160-million critical infrastructure contract to the Kier VolkerFitzpatrick joint venture in November.
The current work is part of a wider programme of work to support US Air Force operations in the UK. More than $1 billion is expected to be invested in the UK over the next seven to 10 years.
