NATO-ARTH

At the recent I/ITSEC conference in Orlando, a rather unusual project at the NATO booth dealt with Modelling & Simulation to support ‘resilience building’ and the creation of refugee flow management. While this is not an official NATO-endorsed operational domain, it is a common term of art in several nations when assessing the operational environment. The large masses of people movement are a permanent event in human history. It is related to other large-scale scale events such as natural disasters or man-made crisis, including any kind of military operation.

The research should meet the needs of NATO (SHAPE, JFCs) and the NATO member countries to predict, monitor and control the movement of large masses of people and influence national and alliance resilience. It will improve resilience in crisis and large-scale disaster. The research task includes the development of an AI-supported data acquisition and processing as well as a logic for crowd management.

The NATO booth also featured CAPSULE, a product from Canadian company ARHT Media, a provider of hologram content. Their latest hologram display creates remarkable interactive experiences. ARHT promises the future of communication and training for today's military with the novel hologram display. It allows hologram presenters to interact with the audience at multiple events simultaneously or to play back recorded presentations.

With this hologram technology, interactive training and live remote communication could be conducted effectively and travel costs would also be saved. It allows hologram presenters to interact with the audience at multiple events simultaneously or play recorded presentations. The Holopresence display solution works in all lighting conditions. In fact, the hologram is very impressive, and you believe the person you are talking to could step out of his box at any moment.

The Science and Technology Organization's (STO) Modelling and Simulation Group (NMSG) and the Allied Command Transformation (ACT) represented NATO at I/ITSEC 2022. Themes presented at the NATO booth focused on the M&S Application Area of Military Training and M&S Standardisation, uses of M&S in research, concept development and experimentation, and advanced distributed learning. NATO staff showed current examples of related technical activities in the course of live demonstrations.
