Cobra Simulation has been granted a patent for a terrain generation algorithm, Patent No. GB2621009, which the company believes is set to redefine the way terrains are created in virtual environments.

The patented method generates 3D landscapes from sparse point datasets, such as LiDAR scan data. By employing a technique known as signed distance field (SDF) ray marching, the algorithm reconstructs detailed 3D environments in real-time. This allows for the creation of vast, lifelike terrains without the computational burden typically associated with such detail.

Some of the key features include:

Efficient Data Handling: The algorithm processes sparse and incomplete data, common in aerial LiDAR scans, by generating adjacency vector data and using it to interpolate and reconstruct detailed terrain elements.

Real-Time Rendering: Unlike traditional methods that require extensive manual input, Cobra’s algorithm automates the terrain generation process, allowing for real-time rendering of 3D landscapes with high visual fidelity.

Moreover, the system’s integration with deep learning techniques enhances the realism of these environments, making them indistinguishable from the real world.

To take this technology to the next level, Cobra Simulation is seeking investors to help them integrate advanced AI and machine learning techniques into its terrain generation algorithm. AI and machine learning will enable the system to continuously learn from new data, refining and improving the accuracy and realism of generated terrains over time.

The first phase of this development was made possible with the support of EPIC Games, which awarded Cobra Simulation through its EPIC MegaGrants program. This funding helped Cobra secure the patent and complete the foundational work on the algorithm. Now, with the foundation laid, Cobra plans to expand its capabilities and drive innovation in the digital twin market.
