U.S. Army Japan has commenced North Wind 25, a bilateral cold-weather field training exercise with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF). Running through February 9, 2025, the exercise is taking place at Camp Makomanai and the Hokudai-en Hokkaido Large Training Area in northern Japan. Approximately 190 U.S. Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, and 400 JGSDF personnel from the 18th Infantry Regiment, 11th Brigade, Northern Army, are participating.

The exercise aims to enhance combat readiness, interoperability, and tactical operations in Arctic conditions. Participants will exchange tactics, techniques, and procedures while improving mobility with cross-country skiing and snowshoeing over rugged terrain. Officials emphasized the importance of North Wind in strengthening the U.S.-Japan alliance and maintaining regional stability.
