The Center for Mine Safety and Health at the University of Utah's Department of Mining Engineering, in collaboration with Chile-based Minverso, has developed the initial phase of a pioneering metaverse platform for mining training using virtual reality (VR), according to the university.

Launched in February 2024, it offers real-time emergency guidance to underground mine workers, aiming to save lives and promote a global culture of mine health and safety. During an open house, students and visitors experienced the VR system, exploring a virtual classroom and an underground mine.
