Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) member firms invested $1.6 billion in workforce education in 2021, up from $1.3 billion in 2020, according to the group’s 2022 Workforce Development Survey.
This supports training for more than 1.3 million participants across craft, leadership, and safety programs. Safety training made up the largest share at 56%, while craft education saw a notable rise to 34% of total investment. General and construction management firms accounted for 65% of the total, reflecting increased demand for skilled labor as the industry faces a significant workforce gap.
The survey also found that ABC members spent an average of 7.4% of payroll on training. Women’s participation in supervisory and trade roles increased slightly. ABC offers more than 800 workforce education programs nationwide, including over 300 government-registered apprenticeships. The survey was conducted by FMI between January and February 2022, using reported averages from participating member firms.
