Apple has filed a patent application for a handheld input device designed to enhance interaction with extended reality(XR) headsets. Unlike earlier slender, stylus-like concepts, this version features a thicker, ergonomic design that accommodates multiple grip styles and more natural hand movements. The device is engineered to support tasks such as writing, drawing, and other immersive inputs in virtual or augmented environments.
A key innovation is its ability to reduce power consumption through smart tracking. It uses a constellation of light emitters to track position, but selectively disables emitters that are not visible to the system’s cameras—saving energy and minimizing heat.
The tool may also include a range of sensors, such as outward-facing cameras, ultrasonic transmitters, inertial measurement units (IMUs), and force or capacitive sensors. Together, these components could enable a seamless, efficient way to interact with digital environments through XR headsets.
