Torch Technologies, a Huntsville-based defense contractor, has repurposed its military training tool to enhance healthcare education. The system, originally developed for THAAD missile training, now powers Simvana, a mixed-reality platform used by the Huntsville Hospital System to train new nurses.

Simvana uses affordable VR headsets to immerse users in realistic hospital scenarios before they treat patients. The platform started with training for nurse anesthetists and now offers 10 simulations covering patient safety, room setup, and high-risk situations like combative patients and suicide prevention.

Huntsville Hospital sends all newly hired nurses and technicians through Simvana "boot camp," reducing costs while increasing engagement. Unlike traditional equipment, Simvana offers a scalable, cost-effective training solution. The program is expanding to nursing schools across Alabama to broaden access to quality training.
