The Port of Milford Haven has completed significant upgrades to its navigation simulator suite at Milford Waterfront, equipping the facility with advanced technology for bespoke specialist training. The improvements include new hardware and enhanced virtual reality capabilities, enabling marine professionals to safely train for a variety of real-world scenarios, including extreme weather, emergencies, and escort tug operations.
The upgrades were delivered by Netherlands-based company MARIN, featuring the latest hardware for processing and graphics, along with enhanced ‘Dolphin’ software for scenario creation. New 4K visuals displayed on 75-inch screens improve depth and field of vision, providing a highly realistic training environment.
A recent training session, led by Training Pilot Captain Mark Johnson and assisted by ex-Pilot Andy Hillier, involved Svitzer team members and Pilots Matt Roberts and Ian Coombes. Participants navigated a simulated scenario involving a tanker drifting without engine power or steering amidst deteriorating weather and sea conditions. This exercise required close coordination between pilots and towage operators to rehearse emergency response procedures and refine their skills.
Marine Pilot and Simulator Instructor, Captain Ewan McNicoll, said: “This simulator suite has future proofed our training capabilities, both internally for Pilots and marine staff, but also externally for clients wishing to use the facility, be it for training purposes or research and development. We can create any type of scenario with any type of ship, ranging from practicing ship handling manoeuvres to emergency situations."
These upgrades enhance the Port of Milford Haven’s ability to support skill development and safety in maritime operations while also fostering opportunities for research and development.
