High school students in rural Minnesota are using virtual reality (VR) headsets to train as certified nursing assistants, addressing a statewide nursing shortage. The program, supported by remote instructors, allows students to practice essential skills in a simulated environment.

Funded by a state grant, the initiative helps students gain hands-on experience while reducing barriers like long commutes. Research suggests VR lowers anxiety in nursing students, making training more effective. School officials see the program as a way to connect students with local healthcare careers, helping to fill critical nursing vacancies in rural communities.

With 11% of nursing jobs in Minnesota unfilled last year, schools see VR training as a way to connect students with local healthcare careers and help address critical workforce shortages.
