One of world's most elaborate medical simulations, conducted Thursday at the Memorial Center for Learning and Innovation, will lead to new knowledge on how to save lives and improve care for patients through better preparation and communication, organizers of the event said.
Rather than learning from mistakes involving real patients, health care providers increasingly will harness simulation technology and facilities such as the Memorial center to build better systems of care, said Dr. Sapan Desai, a Southern Illinois University School of Medicine doctor who spearheaded the simulation."I would say that this is a big win for the way that we approach health care today," Desai, a vascular surgeon, said after the three-hour exercise involving about 50 professionals from SIU, Memorial Medical Center and the Chatham Fire Protection District. "In the past, it was always waiting for someone to get hurt before we could make changes and improve our processes. Today we're leading a revolution."
