The University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa broke ground on the new home for its Morsani College of Medicine and USF Health Heart Institute, a cardiovascular research institute to pioneer new discoveries for heart health.

The new building is part of a $3 billion redevelopment project is expected to span 50-plus acres in downtown Tampa, which will include new hotels, office towers, apartments and condominiums, as well as parks, stores, restaurants and other public spaces.

The $153 million building will be closer to Tampa General Hospital, the school's primary teaching and clinical affiliate and to USF's Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation. It is expected to open in late 2019.
