Temple University’s School of Podiatric Medicine is bringing some innovation to their student’s medical education with their new simulation center. Students will now be able to train through real-life scenarios, practice patient interactions and receive immediate feedback from educators and faculty members.

School of Podiatric Medicine Simulation Center

The simulation center inaugurated October 10th along with a new anatomy lab that has been upgraded from an existing facility. The simulation center has 12 clinic rooms all equipped with diagnostic tools and audio and video recording equipment to provide feedback. The facility will be used for additional training where students can practice quality control and improve patient care.

“A dedicated simulation center for podiatric students will allow us to prepare students better and more thoroughly for professional practice,” said Raquel Perez, a clinical instructor in the Standardized Patient Program who was instrumental in planning the new center. “We are a supplementary program designed not to replace real-world experience, but to provide students with a safe and nurturing environment in which to make mistakes and learn from them.”

The university’s simulation center will provide medical students with additional opportunities with early intervention and skills development. To provide appropriate and immediate feedback, students use audio and video recording equipment. Additionally, the simulation lab’s clinic rooms have one-way window errors so educators and physician can observe student interactions with simulated patients without being physically present inside the room.

Temple University’s School of Podiatric Medicine is one of only nine similar facilities in the nation and the only podiatric medical school in Pennsylvania.
