Rome Memorial Hospital becomes teaching site for New York Medical College

New York Medical College (NYMC) in Vallhalla, New York and Rome Memorial Hospital (RMH) established an academic affiliation designating the hospital as a teaching site NYMC’s third- and fourth-year medical students. The agreement outlines a mutual commitment to promoting medical education programs, meeting the medical care needs of the community and developing more clinical education and research.

The partnership establishes a clerkship program at the hospital for the training and education of NYMC’s undergraduate medical students on required and elective rotations in internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, primary care, emergency medicine and other specialties. RMH is a nonprofit health care system based in Rome, New York that serves patients throughout Central New York through a range of healthcare services and in collaboration with its community partners.

“The opportunities at a community hospital are different than at a large academic facility,” says Orthopedic Surgeon R. Mitchell Rubinovich, M.D. CM FRCS(c) FACS, associate dean at Rome Memorial Hospital and president of the medical staff. “Rome gives medical students the opportunity to be directly involved in patient care under the tutelage of an attending physician.”

Rubinovich says teaching helps keep practicing physicians current, too. “Teaching medical students keeps you sharp, makes you answer pointed questions and re-examine things that you believe in. It’s rewarding to impart the knowledge that you’ve garnered through the years to the next generation of physicians.”
