NorwellEDGE

A new immersive scenario game that puts oil and gas worker’s skills to the test has been launched by specialist energy e-learning company Norwell EDGE.

Players are transported to virtual rigs where they can explore the layout, equipment and systems needed to drill wells before being put through their paces with a range of tasks. Each task is aligned with the content and learning outcomes on Norwell EDGE’s digital training platform.

The 3D scenarios cover both onshore and offshore wells and can be tailored to specific company projects and activity.

Mike Adams, the co-founder of Norwell EDGE, said: “With the current limitations for face-to face training, digital learning is needed now more than ever. The gamification of learning not only significantly increases knowledge retention – especially compared to traditional classroom training - but also allows learners to practice their newly acquired skills in a safe environment.

“As the oil and gas industry embraces the digital transformation of its operational activity, it is now starting to explore how training could also be improved. Introducing gaming elements to our platform was the natural next step in the evolution of our courses to ensure they remain at the forefront of technical training in the industry.”

The development of the virtual scenarios, called Virtual EDGE, follows an extensive upgrade across the e-learning platform to incorporate the latest digital learning techniques including increased use of animation, quizzes, video, and bite-sized learning.

Norwell EDGE was launched in 2017 in response to what its partner company, Norwell Engineering, saw as an increasing failure by the global industry to adequately address competency and wells training effectively. All of Norwell EDGE’s digital training modules are aligned to Oil and Gas UK’s wells competency guidelines and priced to ensure it remains affordable to individuals and companies alike.

“We are working to level the playing field in oil & gas, bringing forward the best in new training technology and distilling complex wells topics in a way that allows widescale and continuous training to take place. By doing this we hope to bring training costs down, increase learner engagement, boost knowledge retention and allow the industry to upskill in a flexible and digital environment.” added Mike who is also a Scottish representative for the World Petroleum Council.
