A new virtual reality (VR) simulation is offering visitors at Mount Maunganui the chance to experience the impact of a 9-meter tsunami. The 10-minute VR experience, available this summer, allows users to make decisions during an earthquake and tsunami scenario. Emergency Management Bay of Plenty highlights that over 110,000 people live in tsunami evacuation zones, with many in Tauranga.
The simulation aims to make the risks of such disasters more tangible and educate the public on evacuation procedures. Community Resilience Advisor Isaac Orchard emphasized the need for hands-on education about low-likelihood events like tsunamis, noting that the simulation brings the threat to life. The experience is designed for those aged 12 and up, though it may be distressing for younger participants. The initiative is part of broader efforts to prepare the community for natural disasters.
