Student paramedics in the West Midlands are the first in the UK to use a virtual reality (VR) simulator to perfect their emergency driving skills. This new training method complements traditional hands-on instruction and prepares future paramedics at West Midlands Ambulance Service for potential hazards they may face in real-world ambulance driving situations. The VR simulator allows students to safely navigate scenarios such as extreme weather conditions or pedestrians in the road—situations that could be too risky to simulate during actual driving practice.

The VR technology is integrated into the four-week Emergency Blue Light driving course, enabling students to experience realistic challenges in a controlled, safe environment. Instructors can assess trainees' responses to these virtual scenarios and guide them on improving their decision-making skills. This innovative tool enhances training by offering students a way to practice and refine their driving techniques, ultimately contributing to safer emergency response driving in real-life situations.
