CFA believes it has unveiled the world's first mixed reality fire aviation simulator to enhance training for aerial firefighters in Australia. The simulator, featuring 280-degree mixed reality goggles, offers a safe, immersive environment to test and improve critical skills.

Launched at the Victorian Emergency Management Training Centre (VEMTC) in Bangholme, the $640,000 project was co-funded by CFA and the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA). The official event was attended by Emergency Services Minister Jaclyn Symes, CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan, FFMVic Deputy Chief Fire Officer Fiona Dunstan, and aviation experts.

Originally developed by CFA Aviation Commander John Katakouzinos during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, the initial trailer-based prototype remains in use. Its success led to the creation of the permanent simulator, which replicates real-world flight scenarios, allowing staff and volunteers to train in air attack, mapping, and communication.

CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan praised the team behind the simulator, highlighting its importance in supporting ground crews during fires. The simulator has already trained over 300 personnel and sparked interest from NSW Parks and Wildlife for a similar portable unit.
