In the dynamic world of aviation, where change is the only constant, it takes strong individuals to lead the way forward. Claire Webster

Claire's leadership has been instrumental in shaping the future of cabin crew training at easyJet. As Training Manager, she oversees training teams spanning over 28 locations across Europe, supporting more than 250 instructors. Claire's vast experience in various roles, including airline cabin crew, crew trainer, training standards, and learning & development, has provided her with unique insights into the complexities of aviation training.

Re-imagining Training – What Does that Mean for Us?

Claire's presentation at EATS 2023 promises to be a transformative exploration of the ever-evolving landscape of aviation training. The topic, "Re-imagining Training – What Does that Mean for Us?" delves into the heart of a question that every aviation professional should be asking. In an industry that has witnessed exponential growth, the need to reevaluate and adapt training strategies is more critical than ever.

Claire outlines a three-fold approach that has been at the core of easyJet's training strategy:

  1. Understanding Customers' Needs: Claire emphasizes the importance of putting trainees at the center of the learning process. This shift from traditional training and checking methods to a "coach to competency" approach has yielded positive results. Cabin crew members are empowered to self-analyze and identify areas for improvement, fostering knowledge, resilience, and confidence within the community. The instructor becomes a facilitator, while crew members take ownership of their development through peer-to-peer debrief discussions.
  2. Supporting and Developing Instructors: Claire recognizes the significance of having the right people in the right roles at the right time. The growth from 44 instructors training in two locations to over 250 at 28 bases is a testament to the importance of instructor competencies. The creation of the Instructor Development Team underscores the commitment to training over checking.
  3. Enabling Innovation: As the aviation industry embraces change, Claire emphasizes the importance of providing practical tools to enhance competency-based training (CBT). Initiatives like Mixed Virtual Reality (VR) in Fire Training and the introduction of new facilities underscore the commitment to innovation.
