At EATS 2024, the Heads of Training meeting, hosted by Captain Philip Adrian, Co-Chair of the Aircrew Training Policy Group (ATPG) and CEO of MPS, and Captain Jacques Drappier, EATS 2024 Conference Chair, brought together leading figures in the aviation training sector.

A central theme of the meeting was Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA), a major evolution in aviation training that emphasises competency over simple compliance. CBTA, which includes Evidence-Based Training (EBT), represents a shift towards assessing pilots’ skills in scenarios that mirror real-life flying conditions.

The meeting discussed how CBTA is now extending across both primary training and advanced expertise areas, helping ensure that training programmes better align with the operational realities of the aviation sector.

In addition to CBTA, the meeting explored the increasing role of technology in training. Leaders examined the potential of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and simulated air traffic control environments (SATCE) as tools to enhance learning and improve training outcomes. Another critical topic was the role of a Head of Training.

Despite its importance, attendees discussed how this position is less regulated and lacks clear guidelines compared to instructor qualifications, sparking a discussion about the need for defined expectations and support for those leading training teams.

The insights gained from this meeting will directly inform the work of the ATPG, and these findings will be shared through Halldale’s Airline Training Leader Forum (ATLF), providing the wider training community with access to valuable developments.

Through the ATLF, Halldale fosters ongoing dialogue on training innovations, regulatory updates, and challenges facing the sector, helping to ensure that aviation training remains at the forefront of global standards.

For aviation professionals seeking to stay on top of these discussions, joining the ATLF offers an excellent opportunity to connect with peers, participate in knowledge-sharing, and access exclusive content from EATS and other key industry events.
