Bohemia Interactive Simulations (BISim), has been awarded a five-year contract by the U.S. Army for the perpetual license of VBS3 and related serviced to the Games for Training (GFT) program. GFT began in 2008, and BISim was previously awarded the program in 2013 as a key subcontractor.

Virtual Battlespace 3, or VBS3, is a desktop training package based on commercial video game technology. It provides a space to train land, air and sea troops through its virtual learning environment. With a massive content library and the scenario development tools, trainees can work through a variety of scenarios and go over their movements with the after-action review tools determine the best course of action.

“The Army has been creative at adapting VBS3 for many varied training requirements and exploiting the development capabilities of VBS3 to create custom training solutions,” said Brian Domian, Assistant Product Manager, Games for Training, U.S. Army PEO STRI. “This contract establishes a direct relationship with BISim that will enable continued collaboration over the next five years.”

In addition to the system, BISim will provide support and upgraded versions of the VBS3 to the U.S. Army, while also enhancing its radio and communication systems, offering online training courses and develop additional capabilities in VBS3 at the request of the army.

VBS3 is primarily used for with units at the crawl or walk stages of training, where soldiers are introduced to tactics, techniques and procedures and begin practicing those new skills.

The contract, currently valued at $4.9 million, could be worth as much as $12.8 million after the five-year term.
