On October 18, Ravenswood Solutions and Lockheed Martin U.K. demonstrated how augmented reality can enhance training for forward observers.
The demonstration, which took place at Defence Training Estate Salisbury Plain, U.K., connected Ravenswood’s Mobile Ground Truth System (MGTS) with Lockheed’s Joint Fire Training Simulator to combine virtual entities with reality in a common operational place.
This gave forward observes the ability to see opposing forces through virtual reality goggles, zooming in with simulated binoculars.
This is a positive step forward in the Augmented Reality Training for Observers (ARTO) field.
Due to the expense of using real vehicles and munitions, this type of training is typically only available once a year and in specialized locations. Now, the military can train wherever and whenever at lower training costs.
ARTO allows operators to hone their skills in Close Air Support (CAS), artillery or naval gunfire, and Casualty Evacuation (CASEVAC), when air assets, artillery, targets or munitions are unavailable, or their use is cost-prohibitive. It also opens the door to non-traditional training ranges, such as urban areas and no-fly zones.
Ravenswood Solutions will be at I/ITSEC 2017, from Nov. 27 to Dec. 1, in Orlando, Florida at Booth #1058. The company is giving a demonstration of the Mobile Ground Truth System, which was used to help demonstrate the augmented reality solution.
